Adobe PDF iFilter 8 - 64-bit Support

Summary

This prerelease software will allow a server administrator to configure the current 32-bit PDF IFilter so that it may be used with Microsoft Office Sharepoint Server 2007 on Windows Server 2003 x64 Edition.

Details

Adobe currently bundles a 32-bit PDF iFilter with both Acrobat 8 as well as the free Adobe Reader 8. This uses the Microsoft iFilter interface and allows third party indexing tools to extract text from Adobe PDF files. However, currently this 32-bit PDF iFilter does not work on 64-bit systems.

In response to customer requests, Adobe is releasing this prerelease version of instructions and files which will allow a server administrator to configure the current 32-bit PDF iFilter to work on 64-bit systems, specifically Microsoft Office Sharepoint Server 2007 on Windows Server 2003 x64 Edition.

System Requirements

• Windows Server 2003 x64 Edition R2 sp2 with Microsoft Office Sharepoint Server 2007. PLEASE NOTE: Adobe has focused prerelease testing on the most current version of Windows Server 2003 with the most current version of Microsoft Office Sharepoint Server. However, this solution may be functional with older versions of Windows Server 2003 x64 Edition as well as older versions of Microsoft Office Sharepoint Server.
• Adobe Acrobat 8.1 (or higher) or Adobe Reader 8.1 (or higher), which include PDF iFilter 8. PLEASE NOTE: Acrobat 8.1 and Reader 8.1 were the first to support 64-bit operating Windows systems. More information >
• Windows Desktop Search 3 for Windows Server 2003 x64 Edition

Installation Instructions

1. Confirm that your system meets the System Requirements above.
2. Download and unzip pdf_ifilter8_64bit_p1_110607.zip to your local drive.
3. Open the install.cmd file in notpad.exe (or a text editor of your choice) and confirm that the install paths are correct. If you have installed Reader or Acrobat to a different drive or to a non-default location on your C drive, you will need to edit the CMD file accordingly. (These instructions assume the default paths as listed in the install.cmd file.)
4. Run the CMD by double-clicking it. When all files have been copied, you will see a success dialog. Click OK. You can also dismiss the DOS Shell Window by clicking any key within that Window.
5. Go to Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Component Services.
6. In the Component Services window, browse to Console Root > Component Services > Computers > My Computer > DCOM Config > PDFThunkingSvr. NOTE: If you are prompted with DCOM Configuration Warning dialogs, you can choose “Yes” to register new components.
   
7. Right-click on PDFThunkingSvr and choose “Properties”.
8. Choose the Security Tab.
9. In “Launch and Activation Permissions”, select “Customize” and then “Edit”.
   
10. If a “LOCAL SERVICE” account is not present, choose “Add”. Enter “LOCAL SERVICE” under Object Name and choose OK.
    
11. For the LOCAL SERVICE account, verify that “Local Launch” and “Local Activation” are set to “Allow”.
    
12. Choose OK. Choose OK.
13. Verify that PDF has been added to the registry.
    1. Run Reg Edit by browsing to c:\Windows\system32\regedt32.exe and double-clicking it.
    2. Within left-side tree, browse to: \\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office Server\12.0\Search\Applications\{site GUID}\Gather\Portal_Content\Extensions\ExtensionList
    3. If PDF extension is present, skip to Step 14. If PDF extension is not present, continue with Step 13.
    4. Right click on right-side Extension List pane and choose New > String Value
    5. Add a name to the new Registry Key (e.g. “38”)
    6. Double click the new Registry Key. For “Value data”, enter “pdf”
       
14. Verify that PDF has the correct settings in a second registry location.
    1. While still in Reg Edit, within the left-side tree, browse to: \\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office Server\12.0\Search\Setup\Filters\.pdf
    2. Verify the following values. If values are not as shown, edit them.

    <REG_SZ> Default = <value not set>

    <REG_SZ> Extension = pdf

    <REG_DWORD> FileTypeBucket = 1

    <REG_SZ> MimeTypes = application/pdf
    

15. Verify that PDF has the correct settings in a third registry location.
    1. While still in Reg Edit, within the left-side tree, browse to: \\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office Server\12.0\Search\Setup\ContentIndexCommon\Filters\Extension\.pdf
    2. Verify the following values. If values are not as shown, edit them.

    <REG_MULTI_SZ> Default = {7AAC697F-FC0F-4925-9A82-EC19DF186039}
    

16. Launch the DOS Shell (Start > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt).
17. Type the following at the prompt: “net stop osearch”. Wait for success message.
18. Type the following at the prompt: “net start osearch”. Wait for success message.
    
19. Close the Command Prompt window.

Microsoft Office Sharepoint Server can now index PDF files.
